Understanding how your WASSCE grades are being converted into aggregates is important, especially for SHS graduates aiming for university or college admission in Ghana.

If you’re an SHS graduate or currently awaiting your WASSCE results and you are looking to know how to calculate your WASSCE aggregate score, then grab a pen and paper because this article will show you exactly how to do that.

We will help you understand the grading system, how to calculate your aggregate, and what it means for university admission in Ghana.

Before we dive into how to calculate your WASSCE aggregates, we’d like to first explain to you how the WASSCE grading system works and then take you through the process of calculating the aggregates.

WASSCE Grading System

Before you can calculate your aggregate, it’s important to understand how WAEC assigns grades and the points they carry:

Grade Score (%) Interpretation Aggregate Points
A1 75 – 100 Excellent 1
B2 70 – 74 Very Good 2
B3 65 – 69 Good 3
C4 60 – 64 Credit 4
C5 55 – 59 Credit 5
C6 50 – 54 Credit 6
D7 45 – 49 Pass 7
E8 40 – 44 Pass 8
F9 0 – 39 Fail 9

 Subjects Used For Your Aggregate

WAEC used six subjects to grade students, so for that matter, if you want to calculate your WASSCE aggregate, you also have to select 6 subjects out of the 9 subjects.

  • 3 Core Subjects:

    • English Language

    • Core Mathematics

    • Integrated Science or Social Studies

  • 3 Elective Subjects (based on your course of study)

For a science applicant, integrated science is often prioritized over social studies.

How to Calculate Your WASSCE Results/Aggregate

Assuming you obtained the following grades in your WASSCE examination:

Subject Grade
English Language B3
Core Mathematics B2
Integrated Science A1
Social Studies A1
Physics A1
Chemistry B3
Elective Mathematics B2
Biology C4

Then, to calculate your aggregates, you will have to do the following.

Subject Grade Aggregate Point
English Language B3 3
Core Mathematics B2 2
Integrated Science A1 1
Physics A1 1
Chemistry B3 3
Elective Mathematics B2 2

Total Aggregate Score = 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 3 + 2 = 12

In this case, your WASSCE aggregate score is 12, which is considered excellent for university admission.

What Is a Good WASSCE Aggregate?

Aggregate Score Admission Chance
6 – 12 Very High (Top-tier courses)
13 – 18 Moderate (May be competitive)
19 – 24 Low (Consider backup options)
25+ Very Low (May not qualify)

Quick Tips for Students

  • Choose the strongest 6 subjects (3 core + 3 electives)

  • Avoid counting any subject with D7, E8, or F9

  • Use aggregate calculators on educational websites to cross-check

  • Ensure you meet the cut-off points for your desired university and program

Your WASSCE aggregate plays an important role in your academic future. The earlier you understand how it works, the better you can plan your next step, be it applying to a university, polytechnic, or teacher training college.
