2025 SHS Placement: Ministry of Education Guides BECE Candidates on School Selection

The Ministry of Education has held a press briefing to kickstart preparations for the 2025 Senior High School (SHS) placement exercise. The briefing provided guidance to BECE candidates and their parents on how to confirm school choices and other essential details to ensure a smooth placement process.

During the briefing, the Ministry instructed candidates to use a dedicated online portal to verify their personal and academic information, including selected schools, programmes, and boarding status. Parents and guardians were encouraged to assist in the verification process.

The Ministry highlighted that this step was necessary to prevent mismatches, such as placing male students in all-girls schools or female students in all-boys schools, and to ensure students are only placed in schools they had chosen.

A Ministry source stated that confirming details early would ensure the placement exercise, scheduled to begin early next month, proceeds without issues.

2025 BECE Statistics

The Ministry also shared statistics from the 2025 BECE, noting that 603,328 candidates registered for the examination. This included 297,250 males and 306,078 females from 20,395 schools. Among the candidates, 72 had visual impairments, 239 had hearing impairments, and 161 required other test accommodations.

The exams were conducted at 2,237 centers nationwide, with 2,526 candidates absent. WAEC confirmed that 294,454 candidates were eligible for placement, excluding those whose results were cancelled or withheld.

Results Cancellations and Withheld Results

The press briefing revealed that 177 candidates’ results were cancelled and 93 candidates’ results were withheld. The Ministry advised that candidates with affected subjects check whether any of the core subjects, Mathematics, English, Social Studies, or Science, were involved.

Candidates with cancelled core subjects would not participate in this year’s placement, while those with withheld results must await WAEC clearance before placement can proceed.
